ARTIST STATEMENT

We are seven years old. Mckenzie walks ahead through twilight in the trees and hair-like grass of Waskesiu. The flowers on her t-shirt bloom. Her curly hair burns in the red-yellow light.

Through meticulous detail and the collaging of photo-realism, my practice implicates drawing as a method of adornment and a tool for close observation. I investigate sensuality and interpersonal relationships, with an emphasis on intimacy in public and private realms. My work draws on both the gender coded and socially charged contexts of drawing and portraiture, allowing for a personal exchange between the subject and myself. Through pale and evocative imagery, my drawings and sculptural works probe the relationship between the sensorial and the self, displaying both quiet moments of intimacy as well as sensually charged and subversive instances of feminized self-empowerment. In closely photographing and then drawing and casting human subjects, I aim to evoke an intimate and sensually engaging experience for the subject, the viewer, and myself. My work navigates both femininity and the interpersonal through touch and human hair as agents and symbols of power. A theoretical collaging of sexuality, domesticity and academic portraiture, my practice is a sensuous and indulgent site for introspection and personal, in-depth learning and research.
